Karen Gillan became a part of Doctor Who mythology when she stepped into the shoes of Amy Pond for the first time in the Doctor Who Season 5 premiere episode, "The Eleventh Hour." The episode wasn't just the first of the new season and her first as the Doctor's new companion, but also the first episode since Steven Moffat took over as series showrunner and the debut episode for Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.

Karen Gillan remained the Doctor's companion through two and one-half seasons, departing midway through Doctor Who Season 7. Gillan returned for one final shot in the Doctor Who Christmas Special "The Time of the Doctor," Smith's last episode as the Doctor.
Now, with Moffat's departure from Doctor Who set for the end of Season 10, some fans wonder if Gillan may return as Amy once more to give her showrunner a proper send off the same way she did her Doctor. Speaking to the Wrap, Gillan reveals that she wouldn't be opposed to making an appearance, but that she's much more interested in the show's future than the past.
"If they ask me, I would be back there in a shot, but I think I'm more excited about seeing Pearl take over as companion, because she was amazing," Gillan says.
By "Pearl" Gillan is referring to Pearl Mackie, the actress who will join Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor as new companion Bill in Doctor Who Season 10. Bill was introduced to fans in a short that aired on British television in 2016. Audiences got to know Bill a little better in the Doctor Who Season 10 trailer.
Gillan is keeping busy these days. She's reprising her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and is confirmed to bring the character to Avengers: Infinity War as well. She's also working on writing and starring in her directorial debut film, formerly titled Tupperware Party, which re-teams her with Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Lee Pace. Given all of that, it is understandable that she may have to check her schedule to see if she has time to give to the Time Lord.
